Why is Algebra Important?
This is a question that virtually every pupil I have ever taught as asked. It is relatively easy for the mathematics teacher to surf the internet to give a list of reasons (for example https://cedartutoring.com/uncategorized/why-is-algebra-important-the-reasons-why-it-is-vital-to-learn/ ).
The importance of learning algebra is because it acts as a gatekeeper for later mathematics courses (Ferrini - Mundy et al., 2005). Algebra has applications in almost all the other areas of mathematics and is a major contributor to learning in other disciplines.
On a purely economic level basic algebra is important in everyday life because it helps individuals develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and logical reasoning skills. Whereas a mathematician might argue that algebra is beautiful and is an important life skill worth understanding and mastering. Whatever the reasons as mathematics educators we have a responsibility to introduce all learners to the subject.
