Measurement

Written by Jane Jones (University of Winchester) and Clare Tope (Open University)

1.0 Overview

One of the most common ways in which we use numbers in everyday life is in measurement. Measure provides a concise way of describing an attribute using a number and a unit of measure and in doing so allows us to communicate lengths, weights, temperature and so on.

Make your own Maths Dictionary

You need to ensure the children you are teaching understand the mathematical language you will be using. Sometimes, children may associate key words in mathematics with different meanings in every day life.

Using your knowledge of the children you are teaching, what you want them to learn, and the resources in the cell “Language & Definitions (Dictionaries)” develop a Maths Dictionary for those you are teaching.
