The causes perceived by teachers were in order with the strongest cause first were:

Class repetition, friendship with out of school children, difficulty in learning, family crises, child labour.

Lowest issues were poor relationship with teachers, physical characteristics of the student, poor facilities, class sizes.

Overview: The Problem

In Pakistan, in spite of all the efforts made to decrease the drop out rate and increase retention of students to the end of primary education, students are leaving primary education at a constant rate. This study was designed to identify the causes of primary school drop out in Pakistan and compare these data with that from a number of other countries.(p.3 Farooq,2001).
